So I knew Afro Cluster were going to blow me away and give me such a great experience like they have many times before, but what I wasn’t expecting was the quality of the 3 (YES 3) support bands. So to start the night was Small Miracles, who gave a brilliant mix of grunge, new wave, disco (trying to think what they didn’t bring). Then the band stayed, and we’re fronted by X MIRARI who gave some solid no nonsense Rap and HIP-HOP. Honestly, not a genre I know much about or listen to at home, but very entertaining Then, King Cerulean - just wow and if every there was a perfect band to get you ready for Afro Cluster, these guys are it. Just loved their set and will be hoping to see them again very soon. Afro Cluster were just ace as always and I can wait to see them again and again!!! 4 brill bands for less than £15, just can’t go wrong!!

Afro Cluster, Le Pub, Newport - 22nd March 2024
As a late show we had already been thoroughly spoiled by 3 other bands by the time Afro Cluster took the stage around 12.30. From this gig alone it was obvious that Cardiff's live music scene was in insultingly rude health as Afro Cluster like Junior Bill's rootsy-ska-RnB soulful vibes before them displayed an assortment of classic influences colliding to create something entirely contemporary, relevant and heartfelt. The fact Junior Bill had a twinge of the Slackers to them owing to a vintage Nord and Roland organ sound i knew the Maze would embrace them wholly and indeed their set went down a storm. Straight from the get go it was clear that the Afro Cluster guys had honed their consummate craft in the sweaty pubs, clubs and back rooms that assemble the live UK gig circuit. People came down front almost immediately to sway and shimmy to their latin-tinged polyrhythmic assault on anyone with a living breathing pulse. To say that AC's set was dancefloor-friendly would be an understatement. It would be more accurate to call their set much closer than friends with the dancefloor after years of special benefits which neither could replicate with anyone else since. Their horny brass licks were tighter than an Italian waiter's kecks and each tune seemed to reach more of a fever pitch than the last (though maybe this could be attributed to my second Courvoisier brandy and coke). After being rapturously encouraged into 2 encores, it would be safe to say that Afrocluster would be welcome back to Nottingham anytime for a second booty-shaking helluva good time getdown. Cheers ever so much guys, come back soon!
